Kimmen Sjölander

Professional CV (curriculum vitae)

I’m a writer, general dabbler in the arts, and scientist living in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Before I moved to Amsterdam, in 2018, I was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in bioinformatics and machine learning techniques for genome annotation and phylogenetic tree reconstruction using concepts from evolution and graphical statistical models. It’s surprising how quickly conversations end if I mention that. But if you’re interested in such things, I still also do some consulting and lecturing at local universities.

Here in Amsterdam, I’ve focused on writing, photography, travel and building community — in other words, life. It doesn’t mean I don’t miss research and many of my colleagues and old students, but there’s never enough time to do everything. And Amsterdam has been a good place to escape some of the craziness back in the U.S.
